PURPOSE OF ESTABLISHMENT
▏The purpose of establishing the Japan Society for Peace Education
To mark the 80th anniversary of the atomic bombing in 2025, we will establish the Japan Society for Peace Education to create a new platform for dialogue from Japan to the world that encourages individuals to “learn, nurture, and connect peace.” This society will serve as a forum for academic exchange, bringing together teachers, peace education practitioners, students, researchers, and individuals from diverse historical, social, and political backgrounds worldwide to examine how peace education can be enhanced through the integration of practice and theory.
The question of how education can respond to the current global humanitarian crisis is becoming increasingly urgent. How can we engage younger generations in peace and encourage their active participation? Peace education can sometimes be shaped by particular perspectives, risking confinement to a narrow understanding. At the same time, although diverse peace education practices are being implemented worldwide, a comprehensive theoretical framework to determine which content and methods are most appropriate for children, pupils, and students has not yet been fully articulated.
To address these challenges, our society aims to serve as a bridge between theory and practice. By collaborating with researchers and practitioners to develop theories grounded in educational practice, we seek to build a more multifaceted and effective approach to peace education. We also emphasize dialogue that transcends positional differences among teachers, peace education practitioners, students, researchers, and others, exploring educational approaches that reconsider the nature of dialogue itself from diverse perspectives, including those of victims, perpetrators, and bystanders.
An essential mission of our society is to create future-oriented peace education together with people around the world, while inheriting and valuing the significance of peace education developed in each region to date. To fulfill this mission, we aim to nurture the next generation of peace educators, support learners' participation and growth, and create a platform that fosters the evolution and advancement of peace education in response to the crises facing humanity and the planet.
We sincerely hope that many people who share the purpose of establishing this society will join us.
